What is a discovery flight?
A discovery flight, sometimes called an introductory flying lesson, is the best first step into aviation.
You’ll fly with a certified flight instructor in a Cessna 172, handle the controls yourself, and log real flight time in one of the most scenic parts of the country.
It’s not a sightseeing tour. It’s an actual lesson. And if you decide you want to continue toward a pilot certificate, this flight goes straight into your logbook as hour one of your training.
What's included?
30-minute ground lesson
Before you touch the airplane, you and your instructor will cover the basics of how flight works, what to expect in the cockpit, and what you’ll be doing with the controls. No prior knowledge needed.
1-hour hands-on flight
You’ll take the controls over the Pacific Northwest, the Cascades to the east, Puget Sound to the west, and some of the best flying terrain in the country below you. Your instructor is with you every step of the way.
Real logbook time
This isn’t a “flight experience” package. It’s a certified lesson with a CFI. Every minute counts toward a pilot certificate if you choose to continue.
No commitment to continue
Plenty of discovery flight students come just for the experience, the views, or as a bucket-list moment. That’s completely fine. There’s no sales pressure and no obligation beyond the flight itself.

What to expect on the day
Plan on about two hours at the airport from arrival to departure. Here’s how it goes:
- 1. Arrive at KAWO — meet your instructor, get oriented to the airport
- 2. Ground lesson — ~30 minutes covering flight basics and what you'll do in the air
- 3. Preflight inspection — you'll walk around the airplane with your instructor
- 4. The flight — ~1 hour in the air with real hands-on time at the controls
- 5. Debrief — a short conversation about what you experienced and what comes next
Wear comfortable clothes. Bring sunglasses if you have them. Arrive ready to enjoy yourself.
